This is a plain English overview. It is not legal advice. Specific advice should come from a qualified Spanish immigration lawyer.
The student visa is the legal framework that allows international players to live, study, and play football in Spain for a full season. Getting it right is the foundation everything else sits on.
An Important Note Up Front
This article is a general overview written from operational experience supporting international players through the Spanish system. It is not legal advice. Every player’s situation is different, and the specifics of any individual application should be handled with a qualified Spanish immigration lawyer. We routinely introduce players and families to lawyers we work with, and we recommend every player has that conversation early.
We also operate a strict integrity policy. We support fully legal pathways only. We do not support, and will not facilitate, any attempt to use education as a workaround to immigration rules. The education on the visa is real. The expectation of attendance is real. Both are non-negotiable.
The Visa and Its Timeline
The formal name is the Estancia por Estudios, residence for study. It is processed through the Spanish consulate in your home country and typically takes six to ten weeks from application to approval. This timeline is not flexible.
If you plan to arrive in Spain in August, your application needs to be in no later than May. Earlier is always safer.
The Documents Typically Required
A valid passport with at least twelve months of validity remaining. A Carta de Admisión, the official letter of acceptance from an accredited Spanish educational institution confirming enrolment at a minimum of 20 hours per week. Proof of financial means sufficient to support your stay. A compliant Spanish health insurance policy. A medical certificate from a registered practitioner.
Players over 18 also require a criminal background check. For US players this is the FBI Identity History Summary, with a processing time of 12 to 14 weeks. Request it immediately.

The Lawyer Conversation
We are not lawyers. The lawyers we work with handle the specific application, the consulate appointment, and the renewals in country. For every player we place we coordinate the introduction and ensure the legal pathway is properly mapped before any commitment is made.
The visa is your legal foundation. Build it correctly from the start, with the right professional support.
The starting point for any player we work with is an honest evaluation. Submit yours at nxtfootballer.com/evaluate.
