If you are reading this in June thinking about an August start, you are not too late, but you are behind.
The recruitment calendar in Spanish football is not the one most international players assume. Players who get the best placements start the conversation months before the rest of the market.
When Clubs Actually Plan
Spanish technical directors begin planning their international cohort for the following season in February and March. By April and May, the players who have been clear about their intention are inside the planning process. The coach knows who is coming, what their profile is, and where they fit in the squad shape being built for pre-season.
This matters even for players with EU passports who could in theory arrive late. Coaches plan around the players they know about. Arriving in July or August with no prior contact often means fighting for the final places in a squad that has already been mentally drawn up.
The Immigration Layer
For any non-EU player, immigration timing is the bigger pressure. A Spanish student visa, the legal framework for stays over 90 days, takes a minimum of six to eight weeks once the application is in. Some consulates take longer.
Before the application can go in, you need the Carta de Admisión from your education institution, financial documents, medical certificate, and in the case of US players the FBI Identity History Summary, which takes 12 to 14 weeks to process.
Working backwards, players targeting an August arrival realistically need their FBI check submitted by April, their education enrolment confirmed by April or May, and their visa application in by May at the latest. Earlier is always safer.
THE RECRUITMENT CALENDAR
Feb to Mar: Coaches begin planning the international cohort. Early conversations matter.
April: FBI check should be in. Education enrolment confirmed. Squad planning underway.
May: Visa application submitted. Player is part of the coach’s mental squad.
June to July: Catch-up window. Options narrowing.
August: Season begins. Players who planned early are already integrated.
The Bottom Line
The point is not that late entry is impossible. It is that early planning, well ahead of immigration deadlines, gets you a better placement, in a coach’s planning, with a real role waiting for you when you arrive.
Whenever you are reading this, the right time to start the conversation is now.
