Without this document you can train in Spain. You cannot compete in official matches. Here is how the process runs.
An RFEF playing licence is what puts your name on an official team sheet in a recognised Spanish competition. Understanding how it works, and who is responsible for what, is one of the most important logistics pieces of any Spanish football placement.
The Club Does It, Not You
The licence is issued by the Real Federación Española de Fútbol or its territorial federation, depending on the division and region. It is club-led. The club applies on your behalf, submits your documents, pays the federation fees, and receives confirmation before you are eligible to play.
This is one of the practical reasons the relationship with your club matters before you arrive. A club that is organised and has experience with international registrations will get you playing faster. A club that is not will cost you weeks.
What Is Typically Required
A valid passport. A medical certificate confirming you are fit to play. Insurance covering you for official competition. The ITC if you have played for a club abroad in the last 30 months. In some cases an NIE, the Spanish foreigner identification number, is also required, though this varies by federation.
Timelines vary. In well-organised clubs during quiet periods the licence can come through in one to two weeks. During the busy August registration window it can take significantly longer.
LICENCE PROCESS AT A GLANCE
Who applies: Your club, not you directly
Issued by: RFEF or territorial federation (Andalucía, Madrid, Catalonia, etc.)
Key documents: Passport, medical certificate, insurance, ITC if applicable
NIE required: Varies by federation, confirm early
Normal timeline: 1 to 3 weeks, longer during the August window
Tied to: The club, not the player. Changing club means a new registration.
The Bottom Line
The licence is a club-run, federation-issued, document-driven process. Nothing more, nothing less. The players who get registered quickly are the ones placed at clubs that take it seriously and supported by people who understand the administrative rhythm.
Get registered. Everything else follows.
