International Transfer Certificate (ITC) for Footballers: The Complete Guide

The football is rarely the reason an international player is sitting out their first month. The paperwork is.

The International Transfer Certificate is one of the most overlooked pieces of administration in international football, and one of the most consequential. Get it wrong and you can lose weeks of the season before a ball is kicked.

What the ITC Actually Is

If you have been registered with any football club anywhere in the world in the last 30 months, your new Spanish club cannot register you with the relevant federation until your previous club releases an ITC through their national federation. This is a FIFA regulation. It applies at every level, including amateur registration in most cases.

In theory the process takes 7 to 30 days. In practice, delays are common, and most of the variables sit outside the player’s control.

What to Sort Before You Leave

Get written confirmation from your previous club that they will process the ITC promptly when requested. Resolve any outstanding administrative issues in writing before you leave. Ask whoever is handling your placement in Spain whether they have a clear process for managing ITC requests and any delays.

This is not exciting work. It is also the work that determines whether you are on the team sheet in October or watching from the side.

ITC FAST FACTS

Who it applies to:  Any player registered with any club in the last 30 months
Normal timeline:  7 to 30 days, sometimes longer
Amateur players:  Still required in most cases, confirm with the federation
College players (US):  NCAA registration may or may not trigger ITC, confirm early
If your former club has dissolved:  Contact the national federation directly, process still required
Best practice:  Resolve everything administratively before you leave the previous club

The Bottom Line

Administration is not glamorous. It is also the difference between integrating into your new squad from day one and sitting on the sidelines waiting for an email between federations. Sort it early.

The starting point for any player we work with is an honest evaluation. Submit yours at nxtfootballer.com/evaluate.
